The Ampeg SVT
New SVTs had to be purchased in 1977 and 1983. While the '77 and '74 SVTs look very similar, the SVTs made in the 80s came with black grilles and cosmetics. Around 1988 (???-check photos) the Ramones obtained an early 70's SVT which became the primary amp. This amp would sit on the stage in front of the cabinets to avoid vibrations caused by sitting on top of the speaker cabinets. The SVT is still available in its original form utilizing 6- 6550 power tubes and also in a (Mosfet) solid state version which is less expensive. After you play an original SVT you will realize that any other bass amp is just a toy. |
